 Lesson Plan for TPACK integration

Learners: 8th Grade Mathematics
Learning outcomes: At the end of this activity students should be able to understand how to solve absolute value equations
Assessment: Assessment will be done through homework assignments and end of chapter test. Points will be given by assignments that are turned in. The final assessment will be conducted by an end of chapter test.

Break down of lesson:
·        The lesson will begin with a review of what are absolute values for about ten minutes.
·         For about twenty minutes, we will go over the lesson and work through problems throughout this lesson by using the SMARTBoard and workbooks.
·        For the last ten minutes of class, we will start homework and ask questions on any problems they may have.

Reflection

Pedagogical-Content:

·        Verbal examples will be used to explain the problems to students. There was also practice and examples to show understanding. This will help students see each other’s work and strategy.
·        I will start the lesson by reviewing what needs to be known before the upcoming lesson. With the help of students who remember and know the previous lesson, we can show the students how the lesson needs to be done and the understanding of the lesson.

Technological-Pedagogical:

·        The technology I will use will help students learn visually. Examples will be shown to help understand the lesson. This technology will help the students communicate and discuss with the teacher and students.

Technological Pedagogical Content:

·        Technology helps understanding and comprehension.  Students can see the problems similar to what they will be doing on the board in front of them.
·        The lack of technology would keep the students from interacting. Students will not be able to show or communicate how well they understand the lesson.

3D Printing

I think 3D printing is extremely interesting to watch and use within a classroom. I feel like this technology excites the students and interests them on how it works and what it is used for. Although I feel like it is good in a classroom, I also feel as though it can only be used for certain things considering how long it takes and the abilities it has. Considering how new the technology is, I am looking forward to see what it is used for in a classroom.

 Teacher’s incorporation of Technology
What technology(ies) is the teacher incorporating in the lesson? The teacher demonstrated problems on a SMARTBoard.
How is the teacher incorporating these technologies?
He used the SMARTBoard to display problems and notes for the lesson.
What are the benefits and drawbacks for the teacher related to using the technology(ies)?
He would show students how to do problems instead of just telling them how to do the problems.
Are there any other Technology tools that the mentor teacher could address?
No other technologies were used expect the printer when the teacher used it to print off notes for accommodations.

 Reflection
How did incorporating this instructional technology(ies) help the students to learn? How effective was it? Explain your answer.

It helped the students understand the lesson more clearly and shown how to do it.

Comparison and TPACK Reflection

The article “Preservice Teachers’ Reflection on Clinical Experiences: A Comparison of Blog and Final Paper Assignments” discusses the advantages and differences of blogging and paper assignments. In the article, it states that reflections can best use to analyzing connections and relationships from students and teachers, but students and students. Reflection is important because while in the process of reflecting, there is more concentration and consideration of the paper. As a teacher, reflection can help you take what you know about teaching and new things to learn to help your students with a better ability and understanding. The article states that, “teachers who have adopted reflective practices will be better equipped to meet their students’ individual needs.” More focus is being brought to “identifying the presence of reflective content rather than other types of assignments.” It is said that blogging is much easier for students and teachers than having paper assignments in the classroom. Blogging shares their writing with not only the teacher but the students as well. This helps with immediate feedback and helpful tips from fellow students and the teacher. Also, submitting through a blog, the assignment remains visible to the student instead of waiting to see it after the teacher has graded it. There are four ways to assessing reflection starting with habitual action. This means that “reproducing material without showing evidence of understanding it”. The second scheme is understanding, followed by understanding, reflection, and critical reflection. In the end, we can say that reflection post to blogs over paper reflections is far more effective in a classroom. The other article refers to the Technological Pedagogical Content Knowledge, the framework for teacher knowledge. The framework of teaching is built off of three things known as technology, context knowledge, and Pedagogical knowledge. These three domains support each other for effective and good teaching.

Technology

The three articles about the use of technology now in the classroom and everyday life, shows how drastic the change has been over the years. As a future teacher, I would appreciate anything that will help me be the best teacher I could be. I feel as though technology helps teachers stay organized and have everything properly planned for their students. Not only does this benefit teachers, but I feel as though students get some learning techniques and methods that help them learn in different way and to the best of their ability. I remember using many different technology pieces throughout my years of school that helped so much within the classroom. Also, it sparked more excitement within the classroom because my fellow classmates enjoyed using these technologies. Although technology can be a good thing for the advancement of learning, I feel as though it needs to be limited to where students do not depend on it as much. When students depend too much on technology, they lose any knowledge and excitement of figuring problems or methods on their own. This can also limit the thinking process for the students to use their own brain for work in the classroom. Einstein’s fear should be every human beings fear because this will affect the natural human life. The interaction between human beings within classrooms, jobs, friends, and relationships will be slowly change from little to none.
